NIA interrogates Sri Lankan people in Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday conducted inquiries in the coastal villages of Rameswaram in the district in connection with a case related to the detention of 38 Sri Lankan nationals in June for their illegal stay in the country. Sri Lankans were detained in Karnataka’s Mangalore in June for illegally entering the country through Tamil Nadu and the case was later taken over by the NIA.

On Sunday, NIA personnel inquired at Maraiyarpatnam, Vedalai and Seniyappadra coastal settlements in connection with providing sanctuary to Lankans here, police said. The officers also inquired about drug smuggling.

The detained Lankans had left their country on March 17 after paying Rs 6 lakh to 10 lakh in Sri Lankan rupees to an agent in the country who had promised them a job in Canada.
