London: With 35,204 new cases of the delta COVID-19 variant being reported last week, Public Health England (PHE) said the UK has seen a 46 per cent increase in concern.
Sky News reported that the total number of confirmed delta cases now stands at 111,157 – 102,019 of these have been reported in England, 7,738 in Scotland, 788 in Wales and 612 in Northern Ireland.
The Delta version, which was earlier recognized in India, now covers 95 percent Of all the sequenced cases in the UK, Public Health England (PHE) added.
Last week, it made up 99 per cent of COVID cases across the UK, with about 42 of the latest cases being related to the Delta Plus variant (AY.1 sub-lineage) – believed to be more transmissible than the original Delta variant.
PHE also reported a new strain called lambda. It is classified as a variant under investigation, with six cases detected between February 23 and June 7. Of these, five were linked to foreign travel.
PHE claims that two doses of the vaccine are still effective in providing protection against the risk of hospitalization.
There is currently no evidence that the new version causes more severe disease or makes vaccines less effective, the report said.
lambda variant
The World Health Organization (WHO) has decided to rename the COVID variants Based on the letters of the Greek alphabet. The newly found version in South America is designated as the ‘version of interest’ and is being called the lambda version.
According to data published by PHE on Friday (25 June), England has reported six cases of this new variant of lambda.
Public Health England also designated the lambda (c.37) version as the ‘Version Under Investigation (VUI)’.
Lambda Variant – Origin and Analysis
The lambda variant has been detected by South American scientists in Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Argentina. Experts are saying that the lambda variant has shown multiple mutations in the spike protein. These mutations can affect the transmissibility of the variant. However, further investigation is needed to understand the mutation in its full sense.
The latest PHE update states: “PHE is conducting laboratory tests to better understand the effect of mutations on the behavior of the virus.
“All appropriate public health interventions will be undertaken, including additional contact tracing and targeted testing.
“Where cases have been identified, additional follow-up of cases, testing of contacts and if necessary targeted case search will be deployed to limit its spread.”

The main symptoms of the coronavirus the NHS recommend people watch out for are:
– high temperature
It is likely that most people with COVID symptoms will have at least one of these listed symptoms.
Since none in three people with COVID-19 experience symptoms, everyone is advised to get tested regularly to prevent passing on the infection to others.
Anyone who has symptoms of Kovid should remain in self-isolation with any member of their household.
People with COVID symptoms should also get a PCR test done at the earliest to verify whether they have COVID-19.
Types of COVID-19 concerns:
Four variants are listed as ‘variants of concern’ on the WHO watch list.
Forms of concern on the World Health Organization’s watchlist include the alpha version first detected in the UK.
Also in the version of concern list the beta version was found for the first time in South Africa, the gamma version was found for the first time in Brazil and the delta version was found for the first time in India.
