Anupama Das discussed at home how students, who mostly come from economically backward families, cannot afford sweaters and are forced to attend classes in winters in cotton uniforms provided by the government.

For over 200 poor young students of a school in Assam’s Barpeta district, the first day of the new year turned out to be ‘warm’ as they received sweaters from well-meaning netizens following a social media post by a theater group.

The movement began with a school teacher looking for resources to help her students.

Anupama Das discussed at home how students, who mostly come from economically backward families, cannot afford sweaters and are forced to attend classes in winters in cotton uniforms provided by the government.

“We discussed how we could help them and then a theater group, Samar Natya Gosthi, came forward to help,” Das said.

Sitanath Lahkar, general secretary of the theater group, said, “We have very limited financial resources. So, we made an appeal on social media and got an overwhelming response from netizens,” he said.

He said that within five days, the group raised enough money to get sweaters for the entire lower primary class.
