In a surprise surprise today, Sharad Pawar said he is stepping down as chief of the Nationalist Congress Party, the organization he founded after breaking away from the Congress in 1999.

Sharad Pawar’s decision to resign as NCP president sent shockwaves in political circles on Tuesday, with leaders across parties reacting to the surprising development that came exactly a year before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis told Pawar decision to leave An “internal matter” of the NCP, saying the BJP is monitoring the situation.

Talking to reporters, Fadnavis said, “Pawar SirIts decision is an internal matter of NCP. It is his personal decision. He is a senior leader and he has taken some decisions. Churning is going on within his party on many issues. So it would not be right for us to comment on it. We will monitor the situation and respond after a day or two.

In a surprise move, Pawar said he was stepping down as chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the organization he founded after breaking away from the Congress. He had headed the NCP since 1999.

Pawar made the announcement at the launch of the revised edition of his autobiography. The announcement was protested by party workers and leaders, who asked the octogenarian leader to rescind the decision.

Speaking to the media, top NCP leader and nephew Ajit Pawar said Pawar’s resignation does not mean he is leaving politics. He said Pawar wanted to announce the decision on May 1 but could not do so because of the MVA rally. “We hoped that this day would come someday,” said Ajit.

“In the Congress party, Sonia Yes Still the leader, but he is not in office. We have to consider his age. All work will be done under his leadership,” Ajit Pawar said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut called Pawar the “soul of Maharashtra politics” and compared his decision to the “resignation” of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Raut said on Twitter, ‘I am fed up with dirty Politics And allegations, Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray had also resigned from the post of Shiv Sena chief. History seems to have repeated itself… But due to the love of Shiv Sainiks, he had to take back his decision… Like Balasaheb, Pawar Saheb is also the soul of state politics.”

Raut’s party Shiv Sena (UBT) is a constituent of the Maha Vikas Aghadi which also includes the NCP and the Congress.

NCP leader Anil Deshmukh, who was present at the meeting in Mumbai where Pawar announced his decision, said the state and the country needed “Pawar Sahab”.
