April 5 is celebrated as National Maritime Day across the country and is dedicated to the role of maritime trade in the development of the Indian economy and the role of India and its strategic position in global trade. An essential element of the Silk Road, India was a nation that served as a node connecting the Middle East and Europe with the East Asian countries.
Every year, this day is celebrated with a special theme which serves as the basis for all the events organized on this particular day. The day also represents and promotes the campaign to improve the state of maritime trade in India and help it reach new heights.
National Maritime Day: History
It was in the year 1919, when India was still under British rule, when on 5 April, a ship named SS Loyalty set sail from Mumbai for London. The ship was owned by Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited, the largest shipping company wholly owned by Indians.
It was an important day as the Indian subcontinent and its waterways were still under British rule at that time. India was, at that time, an important land in terms of global trade, as it connected European trading giants such as England, France and Portugal with the rest of Asia.

The significance of National Maritime Day 2022 is tied to the historic voyage of India’s maritime sector, and is celebrated every year to cherish the history, ongoing development and future vision of maritime trade in and around the country.
The day is dedicated to celebrate the important role that the maritime industry plays in the thriving and sustenance of the Indian economy. In addition, on this day, numerous sportspersons and participants in the maritime sector are lauded and awarded with prizes in recognition of their efforts and contributions. People are honored with the Varuna Award, which is considered to be the highest honor for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Indian Maritime.
National Maritime Day 2022: Theme
Last year the theme of National Maritime Day was ‘Sustainable Shipping Beyond COVID-19’. This year’s theme is yet to be officially announced.
