National Fire Service Day remembers the 71 firefighters who lost their lives during an unfortunate and massive explosion at the Mumbai Dockyard on April 14, 1944. On this day, everyone pays tribute to all those brave firefighters. The Government of India also honors fearless firefighters on NFS Day who have done exceptional work in their service.

The theme of this year’s National Fire Service Day is “Learn Fire Safety, Increase Productivity”.
National Fire Service Day: History
During World War II, a massive fire broke out on the British cargo ‘SS Fort Stickin’ at Victoria Dock in Bombay harbor on April 14, 1971, in which 71 firefighters lost their lives to save life and property. The SS Fort Stickin ship contained one million liters of lubricating oil barrels, ammunition, detonators, cotton bales, currency notes, gold and currencies.
The ship was towed into port on 12 April without any safety concerns, but on 14 April it caught fire and was exploited due to its storage of 1400 tonnes of explosives. The ship was shattered by two major explosions and its wreckage was scattered in the surrounding areas.
The entire Victoria Dock was dismantled due to fire and explosion. About 800 to 1300 people lost their lives in this disaster. The intensity of the explosion was tremendous. As a result, the fierce fire also destroyed some of the highly developed and economically viable areas of Bombay.
National Fire Service Day: Significance
Commemorating the tragic incident at Mumbai Dockyard, people pay respect and tribute to the outstanding firefighters for their incredible commitment and sacrifice.
To prevent such fire explosions in the future, and to raise awareness among citizens and school children, many organizations conduct training, exercises and rehearsals to ascertain preparedness to fight fire emergencies. Additionally, Fire Services Week is observed from 14 April to 20 April across India to spread awareness among the public about fire safety.
During the week, various types of public participation activities are implemented in India.
