‘Nation Trusts Indian Forces’: Lt Gen Kalita on Oppn Demanding Proof of Surgical Strikes

He refused to answer a “political question” on recent demands by some opposition leaders seeking proof of surgical strikes, saying the country trusts Indian forces.

Amid demands by some opposition leaders for evidence of surgical strikes in Pakistan in 2016, GOC-in-C Eastern Command Lt Gen RP Kalita on Friday said the Army does not retain any evidence while carrying out an operation.

Refusing to answer a “political question” from reporters on recent demands by some opposition leaders seeking proof of surgical strikes, he said the country trusts Indian forces.

“It is a political question. So I do not like to comment on that. I think the nation trusts the Indian Armed Forces,” he said at a Meet the Press event at the Press Club, Kolkata.

When asked whether the army kept any evidence during the operation, he replied in the negative.

“When we are going to do an operation, we are not keeping any evidence of that operation,” he said.

The party, however, distanced itself from the remarks and said that it does not reflect their stand as it supports all military actions in the interest of the country.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had termed Singh’s comments as “ridiculous” and said the armed forces were doing their job “in an extraordinary manner” and did not need to provide any proof.

AICC general secretary for communications, Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter that the view expressed by Singh was his own and that the UPA government had also conducted surgical strikes before 2014 (when the BJP-led NDA came to power). The Congress had and will continue to support all military actions in the interest of the country.
