Neiphiu Rio is contesting from the constituency for the ninth time since 1987, the only election he lost.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has filed his nomination papers as the NDPP candidate for the North Angami-II seat in Kohima district for the elections to be held on February 27.

Rio, who filed his nomination on January 6, is contesting from the constituency for the ninth time since 1987, the only election he lost.

The four-time chief minister has again been projected as the leader of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)-BJP alliance, which is contesting the elections on a 40:20 seat-sharing formula for the second time in a row.

NDPP president Rio expressed confidence that the NDPP-BJP alliance would once again form the government in Nagaland.

“Filed my nomination papers as a candidate for the forthcoming Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023 for 11 North Angami-II A/c. I thank the people of my constituency for trusting me so far, and I humbly seek their blessings and support. Again,” Rio tweeted.

Rio has won two elections unopposed – in 1998 and 2018.

The Congress has this time declared Seyivili Sachu as its candidate for Northern Angami-II. He is yet to file nomination.

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton (BJP), former chief minister TR Zeliang (NDPP), BJP state president Temjen Imna and others filed their nomination papers on Monday.

Sources in the election office said that more than 50 candidates filed papers during the day.

The candidates are in a hurry to submit their nomination papers as Tuesday is the time for filing nominations.
