Nagaland massacre: Konyak Sangh observes a day-long bandh in Som district, announces 7 days of mourning

In Nagaland’s Mon, the apex tribal body Konyak Union (KU) on Tuesday observed a one-day bandh in the district to protest the killing of 14 civilians by security forces and declared seven days of mourning from the next day. Ku urged security forces to abstain from patrolling the Konyak region during the seven-day mourning period, and warned that if law enforcers did not comply, they would be “responsible for any untoward incident”. “.

In a letter sent on Monday, the Sangh requested President Ram Nath Kovind to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT), including two members of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) and identify the Army personnel involved in the incident. Do it and get involved. Public domain action taken against them within 30 days. It demanded that the 27 Assam Rifles immediately evacuate Mon for failing to protect civilians, and that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act be repealed from across the Northeast.

“We have observed a one-day bandh in Mon district on Tuesday. It is going on peacefully. We have also announced seven days of mourning from Wednesday,” said Honing Konyak, president of the Konyak union. The last rites of 14 civilians, who were killed in firing by security forces on December 4 and 5, were performed at the Mon district headquarters on Monday. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, his cabinet colleagues and representatives of several tribal organizations attended the event.

When asked about Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement in Parliament, Konyak said, “At present we are not in a position to accept or reject his statement. We are saddened by the ruthless killing of our people. Two survivors undergoing treatment in Assam are known to have regained consciousness.” The union said the incident appeared to be the result of a “complete failure of military intelligence” and “cannot be called a case of mistaken identity”. “The people killed were villagers who had no connection to any element, which in any way could cause the slightest concern to the security forces or national security,” said KU.

It is an act of tyranny beyond reason. No explanation can justify this heinous act of willful crime against humanity. The Sangh said that criminals up to the highest rank should be booked and tried in a civil court.
