“We got very good responses. Today’s protest was to condemn this heinous act by the security forces on the people of Oting and to show our solidarity with the people of Nagaland. Also, we want AFSPA to be repealed. ” NASO President Samuel B. Jirwa said.
Appreciating the stand of the Chief Ministers of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, who have sought abolition of AFSPA, Jirwa gave a clarion call to other chief ministers of the region to take up the issue with the Centre.
In Guwahati, top AASU leaders including its chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baruah led a protest joined by students from different ethnic communities. Bhattacharya said, “Those responsible for killing civilians in Oting should get exemplary punishment. It is clear that only for AFSPA, the security forces have got scope to kill innocent villagers. AFSPA needs to be abolished.”
MZP president Lalnunmawiya Pautu strongly condemned the Nagaland massacre and termed the killing of 14 innocent villagers of Oting “cowardly” saying that the security personnel did not try to verify whether the victims were friends or foes before firing.
“The Indian government discriminated against the people of the northeastern states by the fact that AFSPA has been imposed in the region, which has resulted in the killing of innocent civilians in several incidents by security forces,” Pautu said.
