Rain in Mumbai Live: Waterlogging overnight, IMD issues red alert; local train service affected

Intermittent rains followed by incessant heavy overnight rains lashed parts of Mumbai on Sunday morning. Heavy rains lashed Mumbaikars, bringing life to a standstill as roads were flooded. Severe water logging was reported from various parts of the city, vehicular traffic and local train services were disrupted.

Outbreaks of rain reminded some Mumbaikars of the 24-hour rainfall figure of 944 mm on July 26, 2005.

A BMC official said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains.

Several long distance trains on both Central Railway and Western Railway were affected due to the floods.

Before the pandemic, both Central Railway and Western Railway used to ferry over 75 lakh passengers daily on their over 3000 suburban services. Suburban services are limited to emergency services workers and government employees during the pandemic.

6:00 am | Mumbai will receive “heavy to very heavy” rains

The IMD has said that till 6.30 am on Sunday, Mumbai and adjoining areas received over 120 mm of rain in the last 12 hours. The IMD said Mumbai would receive “heavy to very heavy” rainfall at some places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Extremely heavy rainfall means rainfall of more than 204.5 mm in 24 hours, while heavy rainfall as per IMD ranges between 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall.

6:45 am | WR suspends suburban local train services due to waterlogging

Following heavy rains, Western Railway announced suspension of suburban services due to waterlogging at “several places”.

Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division of Western Railway tweeted, “@WesternRly Presently no local train service running in both UP & DN directions till further notice due to water logging at many places.”

The Central Railway said train services between CSMT and Thane on the main line were suspended due to waterlogging of tracks at Dadar, Parel, Matunga, Kurla, Sion, Bhandup and other places.

Central Railway’s chief spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said, “Vashi services including Bandra/Goregaon suburban services are also not working.”
