Mumbai Court grants anticipatory bail to Union Minister Narayan Rane, son Nitesh in Disha Salian defamation case

A Mumbai court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Union Minister Narayan Rane and his son Nitesh Rane in the Disha Salian defamation case. Salian was the former manager of late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a high-rise building in suburban Malad on June 8, 2020. Six days later, Rajput was found hanging in his flat in Mumbai’s Bandra area.

The court said that if the father-son duo is arrested, they will have to be released on a surety of Rs 15,000. Both were represented by senior defense counsel Satish Maneshinde.

Maneshinde said in a statement, “This proves that Mumbai Police has registered a case against Rane on the basis of baseless allegations at the behest of their political masters.” Instead, the police should take action against the serious criminals and their own officers who have reduced the Mumbai Police to Haftar collectors and murderers.”

He further said that the reputation of Mumbai Police has been tarnished in recent times, who have compared themselves to ‘Scotland Yard’.

A case was registered at Malwani police station by Disha Salian’s parents, who alleged that Rane had made a derogatory statement against Disha at a press conference that hurt the sentiments of the family. Subsequently, an FIR was registered under sections 211 (false accusation), 500 (defamation), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (insulting modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Reacting to the order, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane said, “The Disha Salian case should be probed by the CBI. We don’t trust Mumbai Police.”

Salian’s parents are yet to react to the order.

After the FIR was registered, Rane expected to be arrested by the Mumbai Police and hence approached the court. He has also filed a petition before the Bombay High Court to quash the case.
