The mortal remains of Naveen Shekharappa Gyangowda, a medical student killed in a suspected Russian missile trike in Ukraine’s Kharkiv city, will arrive at the Bengaluru International Airport from the war-torn country on Sunday. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the body of the deceased would reach at 3 am.

The state government has given financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh to the family of the deceased. Naveen, a 21-year-old student from Karnataka’s Haveri district, was studying medicine in Ukraine and was killed during Russian shelling in the war-torn Kharkiv city on March 1.

His uncle Ujjanagowda claimed that he was murdered when he came out of his bunker to exchange currency and bring some food.

Earlier, Naveen’s mother had made an emotional plea to the government to bring her son’s body home. “We could not see our son alive, at least his body should be brought back at the earliest. You (media) have been running around this since yesterday. If you had done the same thing a week ago, my son would have come back alive.”

Naveen’s father, Shekharappa, who was consoled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his son’s demise, had also requested the students stranded in Ukraine to be brought back safely at the earliest, as they are an asset to the country.

Shekharappa was the first Indian casualty in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
