On 24 December 1999, Indian Airlines flight IC-814 going from Kathmandu to Delhi was hijacked and taken to Kandahar, Afghanistan. In order to save more than 170 passengers aboard this flight, India released 3 terrorists Masood Azhar, Ahmed Zargar and Sheikh Ahmed Omar Saeed on this day (December 31) 1999.

There were 178 passengers and 11 crew members on board the plane. This plane was hijacked by five terrorists of Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Mujahideen terrorist organization with the active support and assistance of Pakistan Army.
