Ludhiana: The investigation wing of the State Taxation Department has been running an anti-theft operation in and around Ludhiana for the past few days. Directed by state tax commissioner Neelkanth S Awadh, the operation is being carried out in collaboration with the police department and led by additional commissioner Sagar Setia. While action has been completed at some places, it is still going on at Transport Nagar, Jalandhar Bypass, Rajpura Highway, Jalandhar and Mohali.
Three firms in Jalandhar dealing in aluminum and copper are being traced for suspected tax evasion. In Mohali, two vehicles laden with diamonds, gold and silver jewelery were intercepted by a team on the Airport Road on October 27. The goods were transported from Mumbai airport to Chandigarh (Mohali) airport through two logistics companies. The tax and penalty will be ascertained after the completion of the verification of goods and documents.
Giving more details about other actions, Director of Investigation HPS Ghotra said, “Several inspections are being conducted by our teams at various places in the state including Ludhiana, Rajpura, Jalandhar and Mohali. In Ludhiana, based on specific inputs regarding transportation of unaccounted goods, a transport company’s godown was inspected at Transport Nagar. In the action taken by our team, several documents were confiscated and three trucks laden with goods were detained for further verification and finalization of tax and fine. In another action, inspection of a cold store at Karbra near Jalandhar Bypass is underway, as we have got clues that the company is storing goods of various taxable persons at its facility, but these goods are not in the books of account is done. real owner with intent to evade tax.”
“Besides these two actions, a vehicle carrying 190 bags of tobacco was stopped near Rajpura and found moving without any valid documents. The matter is being verified for recovery of tax and penalty. Further, as per the inputs available with the authorities, ply and wood taxpayers were buying goods from Yamunanagar without challan and evading taxes and causing loss to the exchequer. Therefore, four taxpayers of Rajpura were inspected for irregularities. Finalization of tax and penalty will take some time for verification of stock and seized documents,” said Ghotra.
