According to Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat, who is the chairman of the College Development Committee, the number of Muslim girl students seeking admission in the Government Women’s Pre-University College in Udupi has increased this year. Six girl students of the college had approached the court seeking permission to wear hijab while attending classes. They were insisting on wearing the hijab after the Karnataka High Court’s decision to follow the dress code in institutions. He did not write the final exam citing the same reason.

Although there were apprehensions that the hijab controversy would reduce the number of Muslim girl students, 40 students have already taken admission in the first year of PU in the college. Bhat also confirmed that the students have agreed to remove the hijab inside the classrooms.

The BJP MLA said the college registered good results in the last academic year despite incidents related to hijab. Meanwhile, the Government First Class College at Uppinangadi in Dakshina Kannada district revoked the suspension of six girls who were suspended last week for insisting on wearing the hijab.

Sources in the College Development Committee said that the students gave an undertaking on Wednesday that they would follow the dress code. Sources said the students attended classes on Wednesday. Puttur BJP MLA and college development committee president Sanjeev Matandur said the students have been directed to give an undertaking in writing to revoke the suspension.

In March, the High Court had dismissed petitions seeking permission to wear the hijab inside the classroom. The High Court had held that the fixation of school uniforms is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible, to which students cannot object.
