Monsoon Session of Parliament: The government will hold an all-party meeting at 11 am today, ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament starting Monday. As per the details, an all-party meeting will be held during the session to address the concerns of the opposition as well as formulate a strategy to maximize the productivity of the House.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has called a meeting in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend besides floor leaders of all political parties.

The agenda of the meeting would be to discuss the subjects which the opposition would like to put up for discussion during the session of Parliament.

Notably, the Monsoon session assumes utmost importance as the elections for the office of the President and the Vice President are to be held during this session.

Presidential elections will be held on 18 July while Vice Presidential elections will be held on 6 August.

The term of President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24 while that of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10.

Besides this, the opposition is also scheduled to hold its meeting later in the day to decide on the candidate for the vice-presidential election. The BJP on Saturday declared West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as the NDA’s vice-president candidate.

Monsoon Session of Parliament: Bills and Agenda

During the session, the opposition is likely to raise issues related to the new Agneepath recruitment scheme for the armed forces, unemployment and inflation, while the central government will try to push for several laws during the monsoon session of Parliament.

Some of the bills that are on the pending list include The Indian Antarctica Bill, 2022. This bill is pending in the Lok Sabha.

The Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was passed by the Lok Sabha and is likely to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha in the upcoming session.

The Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery System (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill, 2022 was passed by the Lok Sabha and is yet to be passed by the Rajya Sabha.

The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021 is pending in the Lok Sabha, the Anti-Piracy Bill, 2019 and the National Anti-Doping Bill, 2021 are also pending in the Lok Sabha.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) Order (Second Amendment) Bill, 2022 (with respect to the state of UP – amendment regarding change of name of the district approved by the cabinet) was introduced in the Lok Sabha in March 2022.

The new bills to be introduced in Parliament during the monsoon session include the Central Universities Amendment Bill, 2022.

The Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022 is also a new bill and was sent for printing on Thursday.

Other bills on the government’s agenda include the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2019, (in relation to the state of Assam), the Arbitration Bill, 2021 (with a standing committee headed by Shri Sushil Kumar Modi); The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2019 (Report of the Standing Committee under examination) and the Registration of Non-Resident Indian Marriages Bill, 2019 (Report of the Standing Committee under examination).

Other bills are the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Amendment) Bill, 2019 (Report of the Standing Committee under trial), The Pesticide Management Bill, 2020 (Report of the Standing Committee under Test).
