Modi’s gesture to Nadda, caution against ‘family politics’, 2-minute silence: Inside BJP parl party meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda were honored at the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday for the party’s recent electoral success in Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa. BJP MPs also gave a standing ovation to Modi and Nadda in the meeting.

A touching moment during the Abhinandan was when the Prime Minister gestured to Nadda to garland him first. The electoral exploits – Yogi Adityanath becoming the first CM in 37 years to win consecutively in UP, a single victory in Manipur, a repeat government in Uttarakhand for the first time and a performance in Goa – were the party’s first major victories under Nadda’s leadership.

Addressing the gathering, the PM is said to have given a strong message to BJP MPs that “family politics” will not be allowed in the party and dynasty politics will be fought in other parties. “If anyone’s candidature is rejected, it is my responsibility,” news agency ANI quoted sources as saying on PM’s speech.

MPs present in the BJP parliamentary panel meeting also observed two-minute silence to condole the death of veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar. Tributes were also paid to Naveen Shekharappa, a fourth year medical student killed in shelling in war-torn Ukraine, and Harsh, a Bajrang Dal worker killed in Karnataka amid the hijab controversy.

As there is an atmosphere of celebration after the election victory, all eyes are now on government formation in UP, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The party on Monday appointed its top leaders, including Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, as central observers for government formation in four states.

The BJP Parliamentary Board, its highest decision-making body, appointed Amit Shah as central observer for Uttar Pradesh and party vice-president Raghubar Das as co-observer. Rajnath Singh and co-supervisor Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi have been assigned to oversee the selection of the Legislature Party leader in Uttarakhand.

Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Narendra Singh Tomar have been appointed as observers for the selection of Legislature Party leader in Manipur and Goa respectively. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is the co-observer from Manipur and his cabinet colleague L Murgan is the co-observer from Goa.

While Yogi Adityanath will return as CM of UP, the first consecutive term for chief minister in the state in 37 years, the party will have to call in deputy chief ministers, as Keshav Prasad Maurya, one of the two, lost in the previous government. election with 11 ministers

In Uttarakhand, it is not clear who will lead the government as Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami lost the election. In Goa too, the suspense continues between the current Pramod Sawant and the aspirant Vishwajit Rane.
