Modi Government’s Major Plan For Lakshadweep Creates Worries For Maldives And China

A major decision by the Modi government has emerged amid the ongoing dispute with the Maldives. A plan has been announced to build a new airport in Lakshadweep. The Lakshadweep islands are being considered as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives. Amidst the campaign gaining traction on social media for this purpose, there are discussions about developing a new airport in the Minicoy island group. This airport is expected to operate military aircraft along with commercial flights and fighter jets.

According to government sources, the plan is to create a joint aviation area capable of operating fighter jets, military transport aircraft, and commercial planes. The plan for an airport here was formulated years ago, but recently, there has been consideration to make it available for defense purposes as well. Sources have indicated that since then, the plan has actively progressed. From a military perspective, having an airport on the islands would enhance India’s strength, as it could be used as a base to monitor the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean region. This move gains significance, especially in the context of a recent incident involving drone attacks on Indian naval ships.

The first force under the Indian Coast Guard, which suggested the development of an airstrip in the Minicoy island group, will play a crucial role. According to the current proposal, the Indian Air Force will have an operational advantage with operations being conducted from Minicoy. The development of an airstrip in Minicoy will also boost tourism in the region.

Currently, there is only one airstrip in the island region, which is in Agatti, and it is suitable for only certain types of aircraft. The island region has been a center of discussion and attraction since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit last week. Politicians from the ruling party in the Maldives are attempting to criticize Indian plans to enhance Lakshadweep as a tourist attraction and have tweeted against India. This controversy is escalating further.

Following the controversial remarks made by Maldivian ministers after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, there is now an effort from Israel to promote tourism in this island group. The Israeli embassy has stated its complete readiness to work on projects aimed at developing Lakshadweep as a tourist destination. Posting some pictures, they mentioned that for those who haven’t yet seen the ancient beauty and underwater charm of Lakshadweep, here are some captivating images showcasing the mesmerizing attractions of the islands.
