Mizoram has decided to provide drinking water to flood-hit Assam, an official statement said on Sunday. Chief Minister Zoramthanga discussed the flood situation over phone with his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier in the day and chalked out a plan to send drinking water to the affected areas in the neighboring state.

Mizoram shares its border with the Barak Valley in southern Assam, which is badly affected by floods. Access to drinking water sources has been affected due to the floods. Zoramthanga said his government is ready to transport barrels of drinking water by trucks to Vairangte, along the inter-state border, from where they can be sent to the affected areas as per convenience.

Sarma thanked Zoramthanga for his gesture and said that he would talk to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar and ask the officer to make arrangements for the distribution of drinking water coming from Mizoram.

Meanwhile, the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) has donated 14,000 liters of bottled drinking water, which has been sent to flood-hit Silchar in Assam, Mizoram Minister for Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Lalchmalliana said. A CYMA leader said the consignment would be handed over to the Cachar DC for distribution among the flood-affected people.

A rescue team from Mizoram had recently evacuated 33 people from a mission complex in Silchar. Of these, 16 were also brought safely to Mizoram.

The flood situation in Assam improved on Sunday, though five more people died and over 22 lakh people were hit by floods in 25 districts, an official report said.

According to the daily bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), five people, including four children, drowned at different places in Barpeta, Cachar, Darang, Karimganj and Morigaon districts during the day.

Besides, two are missing in two districts. The total death toll in this year’s floods and landslides in the state now stands at 126.
