Mizoram Seema Samiti seeks people’s support in the fight for ‘father land’. India News – Times of India

Guwahati: Amidst the ongoing border tension with Assam, Mizoram Border Committee On Friday it resolved that it wants to “protect our land as it was occupied by our ancestors to the best of their ability” and asked the people of Mizoram for their solidarity and support.
The Committee stated that it is committed to continue with its stand that the “Mizoram-Assam border be resolved as desirable” inner line 1875, which was the first exercise under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 to draw the border from the Cachar plains to the then Lushai Hills, now Mizoram.
In 1933, the colonial rulers further demarcated the districts on the basis of culture, linguistic and tribal lines and carved out the Lushai Hills district and the Cachar district.
Mizoram follows the 1875 demarcation as it was done in consultation with the then Mizo tribal cooks and rejected the 1933 demarcation saying that the tribal chiefs were not consulted then. But, Mizoram was declared a Union Territory in 1972 and a State in 1987 on the basis of the 1933 demarcation and since then Assam has been following this demarcation, leading to controversy.
The committee approved the actions taken by the government on the border issue and urged the state government to act boldly.
“Since the border issue is linked to ethnic issues, we appeal to the people to stand united on this matter, and show patience to face any inconvenience arising out of the situation. It is our appeal to the Mizo people not to create any hardship for the non-Mizo residents in the state due to the current border issue,” the committee resolved.
The Mizoram government on 23 July constituted the Boundary Commission to address the demarcation of the state’s border with Assam, with Deputy Chief Minister Tawanluia as its Chairman, Home Minister Lalchmalliana as its Vice-Chairman.
The Commission was of the opinion that border issues cannot be resolved through force and thus, the matter should be resolved through mutual dialogue and deliberations and “strongly condemned the infiltration of the Assam Police”. Mizoram Police Post At Vairengte on 26.07.2021, overtook them in huge numbers and opened fire first. ”
The committee expressed “deep sorrow over the avoidable but unfortunate incident in which many lives were lost and many were injured.”
The committee was also of the opinion that the memorandum for the establishment of the Compromise, Delimitation and Boundary Commission was setting limits between Mizoram and Assam, which was signed jointly by the presidents of all political parties, presidents of all NGOs and JAC, 2018 will be revised and amended as necessary.
