More than fifty of the top executives of technology giant Microsoft hosted a concert the night before announcing 10,000 layoffs. Artist Sting’s concert was performed during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos. International media has given this information.
The Wall Street Journal said in a report, Microsoft hosted an event on Tuesday evening. It was an intimate gathering of 50 or more people, including top company executives. The top officials came in the evening to listen to a performance by music artiste Sting. The concert in Davos came a night before the technology giant announced plans to lay off 10,000 workers in its biggest round of layoffs since 2014.
Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella said in a letter sent to employees on Wednesday that his company will lay off 10,000 employees or less than five percent of its total workforce. Nadella had said, “We are living through a time of significant change.”
He had said that customers increased their digital spend during the pandemic, now we are seeing them optimizing their digital spend. We are also seeing that every industry and organization is taking precautions as some parts of the world are in recession and are anticipating it.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Tuesday night’s concert upset some Microsoft employees on Wednesday as the company announced plans to lay off 10,000 people. The report said, “As soon as the layoffs were announced at Microsoft, some employees described it as bad form.” Socializing in Davos is part of doing business for major tech corporations and events are planned well in advance. Some employees said it was not the right time for a company-sponsored concert.
During the World Economic Forum meeting this year, Nadella was interviewed on stage by a Wall Street Journal panel and he talked about the promise of artificial intelligence. He also discussed the challenges for the tech industry and the need to do more with less.
