“We are excited that the LuxXcel team has joined Meta, deepening the existing partnership between the two companies,” Meta said in a statement.

Meta (formerly Facebook) has acquired Netherlands-based 3D smart glasses maker LuxXcel, as it doubles down on its Metaverse dream in 2023.

As The Verge reports, LuxXcel could integrate elements needed to create augmented reality (AR) experiences within prescription lenses, such as holographic film and projectors.

However, Meta did not disclose the amount spent on the acquisition of the company.

“We are excited that the LuxXcel team has joined Meta, deepening the existing partnership between the two companies,” Meta said in a statement.

In 2021, the company partnered with WaveOptics which provides displays for Snap’s Spectacles.

Meanwhile, Meta plans to shut down its video calling smart display ‘Portal’ and two of its unreleased smartwatch projects, as the company slashes 11,000 jobs.

On the company’s earnings call, Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the new high-end VR headset would provide high-resolution mixed reality to blend virtual objects into the physical environment around users.

“Our goal for the Quest Pro line over the next several years was to enable as many people as possible to do what they do better on PCs, in virtual and mixed reality,” Zuckerberg said.

However, Meta is reportedly struggling to acquire and retain users on its social virtual reality (VR) platform called Horizon Worlds – its biggest bet on fulfilling the $10 billion Metaverse dream.
