‘Mental strength takes you far, but technical issues can’t be ignored’ – Sanjay Manjrekar on Virat Kohli

Mumbai: the former India Batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has blamed his tendency to bat on the front foot for Virat Kohli’s current struggles, and claimed that it is “not helping his cause”.

Kohli, the most successful batsman of IPL History, with 6624 runs in 215 innings (223 matches) at an average of 36.20 and a strike rate of 129.13, has had a poor IPL 2022 by its own standard as Royal Challengers Bangalore once again lost in the playoffs.

In IPL 2022, Kohli scored 341 runs in 16 innings at an average of 22.73 and a strike rate of 115.98 with the highest score of 73.

“Virat wants to be on the front foot, no matter what is not helping his cause. Mental toughness certainly takes you a long way, but technical issues cannot be completely ignored,” Majrekar told Royal Challengers Bangalore’s campaign in IPL 2022 after their seven-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad on Friday night. Tweeted after the end.

Considered one of the most technically sound batsmen of his time, Manjrekar also cited the example of how Kohli was dismissed in the Qualifier 2 match against Rajasthan Royals to support his observation.

Manjrekar said in his tweet, “Crunch game… Ball bouncing from front foot to short length again cost him his wicket.”

Kohli, who has not scored an international century since November 2019, has relinquished the captaincy in T20Is while the selectors have decided to hand over the reins in ODIs and Test cricket to Rohit Sharma. He has been advised by Ravi Shastri to take a break from all forms of cricket, with whom the Delhi batsman has shared a close bond over the years.
