The demand for ILP in Meghalaya is not new and is long pending. But ‘No ILP, No Rest’ is echoing across the state, but it hasn’t been able to change Delhi’s mind

Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mowry on Saturday indicated that the issue of Inner Line Permit would not be a part of the party’s manifesto as the focus was more on development programmes.

Talking to the media in Shillong, the BJP leader said the party would release its election manifesto next week. The saffron party, at its core committee meeting in Tura, identified the points to be highlighted in the manifesto.

“The manifesto has been prepared and we discussed it in Tura when BL Santhosh, the national general secretary of the organisation, visited. In that meeting, we had fixed the points for the election manifesto. Soon after the announcement of the list of candidates, we will release the manifesto.

Asked about the ILP issue, Mowry said the state government has already passed an official resolution on it in the assembly. “All the legislators have supported the issue and the matter has gone to the central government, which will take its course and decide. We should wait for its decision.

The demand for Inner Line Permit or ILP is not new in the state; It became even stronger after the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act. The long-pending demand of Meghalaya’s pressure groups and political parties, ‘No ILP, No Rest’ is resonating across the state, but it has not been able to change Delhi’s mind on the issue.

In December 2019, the state legislative assembly adopted a resolution to implement the ILP, which bans the entry of “outsiders” into the hill state. The Center is silent on the issue and the delay in implementing the ILP has angered stakeholders and political parties.

Since the Center has not said anything, people and political leaders are in the dark about the fate of the resolution. With the slogan of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, the BJP is not ready to talk on this important issue.

Mowry said the party is focusing on development. “We don’t have good infrastructure in terms of roads, we don’t have medical or engineering colleges, and people are now discussing traffic congestion, so all these issues will be resolved if we have a double engine government – Government here in Meghalaya and one government in Delhi. Looking at the neighboring state the development has happened at a fast pace in terms of roads, colleges and medical colleges. I think the people of Meghalaya have similar aspirations that they want development and we have There are many issues which will be taken up if given a chance to form the government.
