Polling will be held on February 27 and counting will take place on March 2.

A total of 375 candidates are in the fray for 60 seats in the Meghalaya Assembly, where polling will be held on February 27, Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor said on Friday.

The ruling NPP is contesting on 57 seats, the Congress and the BJP are contesting on all 60 seats, while the TMC has fielded candidates on 58 seats. United Democratic Party (UDP) is contesting on 47 seats, VPP on 18 seats and HSDP on 11 seats.

All parties are contesting elections on their own.

“None of the 375 candidates with valid nomination papers were able to withdraw their nominations today,” Kharkongor told PTI after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations expired.

He said nomination papers of four candidates – three from NPP and one from UDP – were rejected during scrutiny.

He said that the process of screening and evacuation was conducted smoothly in all the 12 districts of the 60 assembly constituencies of the State.

There are 339 male candidates and 36 female candidates in the fray for a total of 60 seats.

The polling will be held on February 27 and the counting of votes will take place on March 2.
