Meerut Medical Students to Teach MBBS in ‘Hinglish’

Faculty members of the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut have started delivering lectures in classes and orientation of the new batch of MBBS students in ‘Hinglish’, a mix of Hindi and English.

English medical terminology is used in lectures but instructions are in Hindi.

RC Gupta, principal of LLRM Medical College, said, “We have started teaching MBBS students through bilingual medium for the first time in our state. The state government had given its nod for this a month back.”

Pankaj Aggarwal, Head of the Department of Endocrinology at LLRM, said, “In the new education The policy lays emphasis on education in the native language, we have prepared content for various subjects of MBBS course in Hindi. It is being compiled into books.”

Aggarwal, who started the process with the ‘Medical Concepts in Hindi’ (MCH) campaign in 2017, said, “We have prepared study materials for various subjects for all parts of different subjects of the MBBS syllabus. This is available on the MCH website and app. Available for free on http://www.youtube.com/watch/watch?

He denied that teaching in Hindi would dilute the importance of English and said, “The beauty of the material is that the medical terminology is written in Hindi. For example thyroid gland is written in Hindi but not translated.” Our endeavor is to teach Medical Science and develop parallel content for all subjects of Medical Science so that Hindi medium students can understand the subject well and do not lag behind English speaking classmates.”

Another faculty member said, “We used to give lectures in English. Now ‘Hinglish’ is being used in the orientation of new batch of MBBS students. The subjects will be explained in Hindi, however the medical terminology will remain in English.”
