According to the company’s new Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, Maruti Suzuki plans to launch multiple electric vehicle models in India by 2025 to catch up with the rivals and become the leader in the segment.
The company, which is planning to launch its first EV model in 2025, plans to produce EVs from its factories in future as the demand for EVs in the country increases. To begin with, the first EV will be produced from the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant.
“We are a little behind our competitors in introducing (EV) models in the Indian market, but we see that still, the market demand for those EVs is limited. The sales of electric vehicles in the Indian market are still very limited,” Takechi said in an interaction here.

He continued, “But that doesn’t mean we’re not doing anything about EVs. We’ve built our EVs using our existing models and putting those batteries and motors and everything into this current model. Have done very extensive testing.We have been testing this for more than a year with many cars in Indian environment so that we can be sure that our EV technology will be good in environment which is very tough in India.
According to FADA, Tata Motors led the electric passenger vehicle segment in 2021-22 with a market share of 85.37 per cent in retail and vertical with 15,198 units. Total electric passenger vehicle retail sales stood at 17,802 in the last fiscal, more than three times from 4,984 units in FY11, the latest data from the industry body showed.
The government is pushing to increase sales of EVs for private cars by 30 percent by 2030. Citing industry experts that EVs could be 10 per cent by 2030, they said they would like to be a leader in the Indian automotive space when volumes expand. , which is not limited to IC (internal combustion) engines only, but to all passenger cars. Also in the EV space, Maruti Suzuki would like to be the number one and leader in the Indian automotive space.
To this, Takeuchi said, ‘We are testing and developing ready-made models for India’s specifications. That it’s not just one. We had said that by 2025 we will have an EV, but there are plans (for others). I am sure that when we introduce our products to this EV market we can be very strong in the EV sector as well.

He confirmed that several EV models will be rolling out in due course after the company launches its first EV in 2025. However, Takeuchi said that EVs are still very expensive and it is quite difficult to make a very affordable EV with current technology.
Maruti Suzuki tested an electric vehicle based on its WagonR in early 2019, with plans to launch in 2020, but decided against a commercial launch for personal use, citing lack of infrastructure and government support. and maintained that it would be difficult at current prices. Sell affordable EVs on a large scale.
Last month, parent Suzuki Motor Corporation announced that it would invest around 150 billion yen (about Rs 10,445 crore) by 2026 for local manufacturing of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and BEV batteries in Gujarat.
“This time the investment is in Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant, but that does not mean we will not produce EVs at Maruti Suzuki plants, we have to produce in every factory on Maruti Suzuki as well as Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) , when EVs become popular. In India,” Takechi said.
The decision to start EV production from the SMG plant has been taken as this new EV is a strategically important model for the entire Suzuki group globally. We are planning to not only sell this car in the Indian market but also export it. Commenting on the semiconductor shortage, he said the situation has improved slightly but it is difficult to give an outlook.
