Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Skid sales marginally in February

new Delhi: Country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday reported a marginal decline in overall wholesale sales at 164,056 units in the month of February.

Maruti Suzuki said in a regulatory filing that the company had sold 164,469 units in February 2021.

Last month, the automaker’s domestic sales declined 8.46 per cent to 140,035 units as against 152,983 units in February 2021.

“The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles that are mainly sold in the domestic market. The company took all possible measures to minimize the impact,” said Maruti Suzuki.

Sales of mini cars, including Alto and S-Presso, declined by 17.81 per cent to 19,691 units as against 23,959 in the same month last year.

Similarly, sales in the compact segment, including models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and DZire, declined by 3.38 per cent to 77,795 units as against 80,517 units in February 2021.

Sales of the mid-size sedan Ciaz increased to 1,912 units as compared to 1,510 units in February 2021.

MSI said sales of utility vehicles including Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and Ertiga declined to 25,360 units as compared to 26,884 units a year ago.

The company said exports doubled to 24,021 units as against 11,486 units in the same month last year.

Along with Maruti in February 2022, Hyundai Motors India also saw a decline in its overall sales.

Hyundai Motor India on Tuesday reported a 14 per cent decline in overall sales at 53,159 units in February.

Hyundai Motor India said in a statement that the carmaker had sold 61,800 units in the same month last year.

The auto major said domestic sales last month declined 14.6 per cent to 44,050 units from 51,600 units in February 2021. Exports declined 10.7 per cent to 9,109 units last month from 10,200 units in the year-ago period.

“As the industry grapples with the semiconductor shortage situation, the company is continuously exploring options with its partners to ensure that customers can take delivery of their most preferred Hyundai cars at the earliest,” the company said.
