Nandan Mandal, an alleged overground worker of the Maoists, had called his brother-in-law in Ghogha, Bhagalpur on the night of August 3 and said at least four times during the conversation that the Maoists would blow up Bhagalpur railway station. . Knowing that his calls were being intercepted, Nandan mentioned Bhagalpur station only to Jamalpur railway station and a tunnel near Munger to divert the attention of security personnel and agencies, his main target, Munger ASP (Operation). He said the Maoists had planned to come down from the hills to blow up the Jamalpur station and tunnel and kidnap the RPF personnel guarding it.
“Bihar Police Special Task Force intercepted Nandan’s call to his brother-in-law. Very soon he was traced in Munger and taken into custody for questioning, during which he exposed the Maoist conspiracy, which was foiled,” the ASP said.
“If they were successful it could have become a big issue. The Maoists had planned to demand a ransom of several crores from the government to release the RPF jawans if they were abducted. They did recce and it was found that two men guarding the tunnel at a time in different shifts,” he said.
He said that during interrogation, Nandan thrice called up the Maoist area commander Bahadur Kora, who lives in Kharagpur hills with armed cadres. “The brave armed men must have come down from the hills to execute the conspiracy. However, Nandan could not get in touch with Bahadur and he could not reach on time. By then the security personnel had traced Nandan near the Amjhar hills in Munger and detained him for questioning.
SHO of Bariarpur police station Amarendra Kumar said that Nandan was arrested on Thursday. On his confession, a pistol, two live cartridges and Maoist letter pads were recovered from the forests.
The SHO said, “An FIR has been registered at Bariarpur police station against Nandan, Vijay Rajak, Bahadur alias Nakul and other unidentified Maoists for conspiracy to blow up a tunnel and kidnap RPF personnel at Jamalpur railway station. It’s been hatched.”
The SHO said Vijay has already been arrested in June in another case in Munger. He said that Vijay and Nandan used to meet Bahadur frequently and supply him with food and other logistics. “Nandan was promised good rewards if the scheme was successful,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ASP said that the conspiracy was hatched in a meeting held at Vijay’s house in Bariarpur a few months back. “Vijay is also a Maoist OGW. Nandan was his right hand. At least four more people had attended the meeting.”
