Pune: mallIn yet another blow to restaurants, bars and eateries, the city is back on Level 3 restrictions from Monday.
Although allowed to remain open till 4 pm on weekdays, many restaurants said there was no point in offering dine services with the operational window reduced to six hours.
For malls, which will close under Level 3, things are back to square one. Many establishments now fear that they will lose several crores per month and are looking at huge layoffs.
Pune Restaurant and Hoteliers Association President Ganesh Shetty (Praha), told TOI that 30-odd food restaurants that recently reopened in areas like Aundh, Baner, Ahmednagar Road And Deccan, many were likely to return to just parcels and home delivery.
“Many restaurants were expected to offer dine-in service from July 1, but now they will not, as most of the dine-in business happens only in the evenings and nights,” said Praha president Shetty. He said his members had recently paid their entire staff vaccinations. “The deficit for the industry keeps on increasing; Employees can’t even go back now,” Shetty said.
Praha’s vice-president Vikram Shetty said restaurants cannot pay their employees half salary. “Despite operating hours and no dine-ins on weekends, employees will either have to pay in full or be asked to go back home. If they leave, they are unlikely to return,” Shetty said.
Restaurants said parcel service made up only 10-15% of their business.
Many malls are now afraid of incurring losses of several crores every month and are looking at big layoffs.
“Frequent, sudden, shutdowns are putting a lot of pressure on our operations, which will impact employment. We have retained our workforce so far, but this latest setback has pushed us back several steps,” said Arun Arora, Center Director Phoenix MarketCity, said.
Surjit Singh Rajpurohit, Chief Operating Officer, Amanora Mall said, “Non-essential shops can remain open till 4 pm on weekdays. Rajpurohit said, the mall should have behaved similarly.
“Irrespective of the operational status, the mall will have to pay electricity, property tax and salary. Establishments without deep pockets will be put out of business,” said a representative of City Mall.
