The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended a CBI probe into the death of Kanpur-based businessman Manish Gupta, who was allegedly murdered after a police thrashing in Gorakhpur.

“Until the CBI takes over the investigation, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted for the purpose will investigate the matter and transfer the case from Gorakhpur to Kanpur,” the statement said.

The government has also ordered the appointment of businessman’s wife Meenakshi Gupta as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Kanpur Development Authority.

The statement said that the Chief Minister has directed to increase the financial assistance of the bereaved family to Rs 40 lakh.

Adityanath had met the businessman’s relatives on Thursday.
