The security situation in Manipur remains tense

Earlier, on Friday, a group of armed miscreants had entered Imphal East from the YKPI area towards the hill.

According to the army, the miscreants fired with automatic weapons towards Urangpat and Gwaltabi villages. Troops of security forces deployed in these empty villages responded in a graded manner to avoid any additional casualties.

The Manipur government has extended the internet ban across the state till June 25. The order came after the Manipur High Court directed the state government to provide limited internet services as the situation in the state remained tense.

Clashes broke out for the first time in the northeastern state on May 3 after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Meiteis constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. The tribal Nagas and Kukis constitute 40 per cent of the population and live in the hilly districts. Around 10,000 Army and Assam Rifles personnel have been deployed in the state to restore peace.

More than 100 people lost their lives and 310 others were injured in ethnic violence that broke out a month ago between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. Thousands are reported to be in refugee camps outside the state and lakhs of men, women and children have been displaced. The state government has imposed curfew in 11 districts and suspended internet services.
