Manipur: Six killed, dozens missing, massive landslide blocks river flow

At least six people were killed and dozens went missing after a massive landslide at a railway construction site in Manipur’s Noni district, officials said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday night at Tupul Yard Railway Construction Camp.

So far, six bodies have been retrieved and dozens of people are feared trapped under the rubble, he said. Rescue operation is on.

Massive debris has blocked the Ijei River, creating a reservoir that can submerge low-lying areas.

An advisory issued by Noni’s deputy commissioner said, “Due to the unfortunate landslide at Tupul Yard railway construction camp, where casualties are being reported and dozens have been buried alive, the flow of the Ijei river was also covered with debris. has been interrupted, leading to a construction. Dam-like storage conditions which if breached will wreak havoc in the low-lying areas of Noni district headquarters…”

As the situation is still evolving and the future is unknown, the general public is advised to take their precautions, and in particular ensure that children do not come near the river.

“Whoever can evacuate is also advised to evacuate. The public is further advised to remain vigilant and be ready for any assistance in case the rain situation worsens.”

It advised commuters to avoid National Highway 37 due to several road blockages.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on the incident.

Shah said a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reached the landslide site, while two more teams are on the way.

“Spoke to CM Shri @NBirenSingh & Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw in wake of landslide near Tupul Railway Station in Manipur. Rescue work is in full swing. A team of NDRF has already reached the spot and is involved in the rescue work. 2 more teams are on their way to Tupul,” tweeted Shah.

The Chief Minister has called an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.

“Today an emergency meeting was called to assess the landslide situation in Tupul. Search and rescue operation is already underway. Let’s keep them in our prayers today. Doctors as well as ambulances have been sent to assist in the operation,” tweeted Singh.

Governor La Ganesan condoled the deaths and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
