Manipur landslide: Assam toll reaches 11; Cremation of two more bodies

The death toll in a massive landslide in Manipur’s Noni district has risen to 11 so far, while at least 10 others from the state are still missing, an official said on Tuesday. He said the bodies of nine people have been cremated at their native places, while two more bodies are yet to be taken back to Assam.

The state government has prepared a list of 26 names of the state engaged at the Tupul Railway Yard construction site at the time of the landslide on June 29. The rest are still missing,” the official said.

A total of 47 people have been confirmed dead in the landslide so far, while 14 more people are still missing from the site. Meanwhile, two more bodies reached Morigaon on Tuesday and were cremated later in the day.

Morigaon Deputy Commissioner PR Gharfalia said, “The bodies of eight victims of our district have reached so far and their last rites have been performed.” The bodies of two victims from Assam were recovered on Monday, one of them from Morigaon, he said. “The other is yet to be identified as it is rotten,” Gharfalia said.

21 people from Morigaon were at the accident site, out of which five were rescued. He was taken back to Assam on Monday and is presently undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Morigaon.
