Mangoes in the mail: Good news for the ‘common man’, Karnataka renews plans to deliver the king of fruits through India Post

Mango may arrive in your mail soon. No, this is not pulp fiction. With the onset of mango season, Karnataka is all set to renew its innovative plan to bring the king of fruits to your doorstep using India Post. The scheme, which was envisioned by the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Limited (KSMDMCL) during the pandemic, proved to be a huge hit as people chose to order their favorite fruit straight from the farm flat.

“Farmers benefitted a lot through the India Post-Mango Corporation Association. KSMDMCL Managing Director CG Nagaraju told News18, People were very happy by placing orders directly from farmers and growers were able to sell their produce at competitive prices, despite the lockdown and travel restrictions.

According to the corporation, in 2020 a total of 100 tonnes Mango Supplied to 35,000 consumers across Karnataka. In 2021, despite the Kovid lockdown and low yield, 79 tonnes of mangoes were sold to 45 thousand consumers.

“This year, though there has been a delay in flowering, we are expecting good sales,” Nagaraju said.

The way to book the mangoes of your choice is very easy. Consumers can place their orders directly on the website (http://karsirimangoes.karnataka.gov.in). The page enables consumers to directly contact mango farmers and place orders for the varieties they wish to purchase. Farmers on the other hand have a separate registration ID by which they can monitor the orders and what category of mangoes are in demand.

Interestingly, after the success of using the portal to help farmers in getting orders from consumers, many people have started building their own websites.

“Now you can find many websites set up by these farmers to sell their products namely Sakth (Awesome) Mango, Bombat (Glorious) Mango etc. It is a matter of pride to us that they have been able to adapt to the technology and use it to their advantage. We are not here as their competition, but as a supporter. We are glad they are doing well.”

As an added feature this year, KSMDMC has also introduced Mango Tourism. This niche concept was gaining popularity before the pandemic, but now the corporation sees it as the right time to launch it once again. Mango tourism is a concept that allows your family to spend a day in a garden with the farmer’s family.

“People can go with their families and pluck mangoes directly from the trees. They can enjoy the produce and can also buy as much as they want directly from the farmer. They also get the taste of home-cooked food from the farmer’s kitchen, which is completely organic and healthy,” said Nagaraju.

KSMDMCL has estimated that the production will be around 10-12 lakh tonnes, but it may take some time for the fruits to come fully in the market- due to late flowering.

“There was unprecedented rainfall late last year and due to this the flowering of mango plants spread over 1.76 lakh hectares across Karnataka was delayed. However, we can expect the produce from Ramanagara, Kolar, Bengaluru urban and rural areas to hit the market soon.”

HS Mahadevappa, a farmer from Tumakuru trained under the government on how to increase production, maintain quality and use new technologies to protect the produce in changing weather conditions.

“I sold about 80 kg Mango Last year and many residents of Bengaluru have been calling me this year asking when I will post them my mangoes,” said Mahadevappa with an excited laugh.

The technical advisory team of Mango Board is now advising farmers, especially farmers around Chikkaballapur, Kolar and Ramanagara, to use wax-covered bags to prevent rot, fungal attacks and insects affecting the yield. For.
