It all started in 2010 when the then railway minister Mamata Banerjee launched a railway project to bring a train network to Nandigram. However, the project got stuck and the work stopped.

Being one of the most politically important constituencies of TMC-led West Bengal, there is a strong contest between Mamata Banerjee And as his former protégé Suvendu Adhikari hits the headlines, another controversy erupts over praise and credit – this time for a railway project.

It all started in 2010 when the then railway minister Mamata Banerjee launched a railway project to bring a train network to Nandigram. However, the project got stuck and the work came to a standstill.

Now after 13 years, the railway ministry under BJP minister Ashwini Vishnu wants to start the network again, but a tug-of-war has started over who will get the credit for it.

As far as the Nandigram railway project is concerned, the stations and platforms were constructed by Mamata Banerjee, but the trains never reached Nandigram. So now when the railway network reaches the constituency, to whom does the credit go? Mamta or Shubhendu, the sitting MLA?

BJP MP Shubhendu Adhikari, who switched sides from TMC ahead of the Bengal elections in 2021, has repeatedly claimed that he had overseen the Nandigram railway project even under Mamata. The BJP leadership also claims that Adhikari discussed the project with the Center several times after Mamata was defeated.

The Trinamool, on the other hand, claims that the construction of the railway project, which has been stalled since 2010, is a reflection of the struggle against the central government, to which Mamata Banerjee is the sole credit.

Trinamool MP and Leader of the Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari’s brother Dibyendu Adhikari said that he appealed several times to the Center to start the railway line keeping in mind the overall development of Nandigram but to no avail.

Let us tell you that the present Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee was the Railway Minister in 2010 during the second UPA government at the Centre.

What did the Ministry of Railways say about Nandigram Railway

Aditya Chowdhary, CPRO of South Eastern Railway, said, “To finalize where the railway will pass, the first thing to do is to survey the area. The report will be sent to the Ministry of Railways. Apart from this, the budget will be prepared for how much will be spent on the project. However, since the Ministry of Railways has given permission for the work, I think there will be no difficulty in starting this work. Now the field survey will be started.”
