How does malware affect users?
After the Crackonosh malware is installed, users use the computer’s processing power to mine cryptocurrency for hackers. Researchers at Avast claim that hackers used malware to generate $2 million worth of cryptocurrency over the past three years.
Avast said Krakenosh installs itself by altering important Windows system files and abusing Windows Safe Mode to circumvent system security.
This malware employs other anti-analysis techniques by disabling security software, disabling operating system updates, and preventing detection, making it very difficult to detect and remove.
Once malware is installed in the computer, the overall performance will slow down. Avast claims that so far more than 2.2 lakh users have been infected by it. The security firm also said that around 800 devices are getting infected on a daily basis – though that number could be higher.
The worst affected countries include Brazil, India, the Philippines and the US.
As long as people continue to download cracked software, such attacks will continue to be profitable for attackers, Avast said in a post explaining the malware. “More importantly, you can’t really get anything and when you try to steal software, chances are someone is trying to steal from you,” the security firm said.
