Maharashtra rains: Death toll reaches 129; rescue operation underway

Mumbai: The death toll in rain-related incidents, including landslides, in Maharashtra has risen to 129. In the last 48 hours, the maximum number of deaths have occurred in Raigad and Satara districts of the state. Apart from landslides, many people have been washed away in the flood waters.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of those killed in flood-related incidents in the state.

The chief minister, who is closely monitoring the situation after the landslide, said he has ordered evacuation and relocation of people living in areas where landslides are likely.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to the Chief Minister and assured all possible help from the Center to deal with the situation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Prime Minister Modi has also announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra.

Apart from this, assistance of Rs 50,000 will be given to the people injured in the landslide from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

“PM @narendramodi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra. Rupee. 50,000 will be given to the injured,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted.

About 15 teams of Army are carrying out flood rescue operations in Ratnagiri, Kolhapur and Satara. In addition, teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to carry out the rescue operation.

A total of 18 relief teams including the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have been deployed in the affected areas.

Rescue operations are in full swing with local people fearing more people may be trapped under the rubble.
