Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and senior ministers met Governor BS Koshyari at the Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday and requested him to nominate 12 names sent by the state cabinet last year as MLCs from the governor’s quota without any delay. Thackeray was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar (NCP) and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat (Congress). Talking to reporters, Ajit Pawar said, “We told the governor that it would be better if he approves the 12 names approved by the state cabinet for nomination to the Legislative Council. We requested him to clear the names at the earliest.” . He listened to us. We said that a lot of time has passed since these names were cleared by the cabinet. He said that he will take an appropriate decision.”

He said that the Governor was also apprised of the rainfall status, dam storage and other information. The Maharashtra government had in November 2020 approved 12 names for the Upper House, as the nominated seats fell vacant after the term of the sitting members ended in June last year. The delay by Koshyari in taking a decision on the state cabinet’s proposal has become a major bone of contention between him and the Maha Vikas Aghadi government of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress.

The government had argued that the governor should have accepted his motion on nomination and cannot keep his decision pending. The Bombay High Court, while hearing a petition seeking a direction to the Governor to decide on the nomination by a resident of Nashik, had last month said that the Governor has a constitutional obligation to accept or reject a motion sent within a reasonable time. Do. The state cabinet has nominated 12 persons as MLCs.
