Maharashtra 125th Global State Committed to Climate Action | Nagpur News – Times of India

Nagpur: Maharashtra Has become the fifth Indian and 125th global state to join under 2 alliance – A global community of state and regional governments committed to ambitious climate action according to Paris Agreement.
Over the years, the state has seen severe loss of life and severe economic disruptions due to the increasing impact of climate change in recent decades. It has the largest number of non-attainment cities in the country where the level of air pollution is not meeting the prescribed standards.
By joining the coalition, the state aims to implement dedicated climate action in line with the Paris Agreement and reduce the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Formed in 2015, the Under 2 Coalition is a global community of approximately 230 governments, whose members represent more than 1.3 billion people and 43% of the global economy. Apart from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana and West Bengal are also part of the alliance.
Announcing the cooperation on Thursday, state environment minister Aaditya Thackeray said the state was committed to making the region climate-resilient with ambitious and prompt actions. “We are taking concrete steps in coordination with other ministries, from energy to tourism, to tackle climate change.
As we scale up our efforts, we are delighted to join the Under 2 Alliance and collaborate with other states and territories addressing environmental challenges around the world. The Minister said that Maharashtra is keen to work with its global counterparts and share the important insights that we all have witnessed through our interventions.
According to a study by the Council for Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Maharashtra faces a high climate risk with a seven-fold increase in the frequency of drought events and a six-fold increase in extreme flooding over the past five decades.
Welcoming the state’s decision, Ash Wei, Director of the Under 2 Coalition Secretariat at Climate Group, said, “As one of India’s largest states, it is a welcome boost to environmental stewardship and the planet in South Asia. We look forward to working with him in the months and years to come.”
