New Delhi: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday said a fresh lockdown will be imposed in the state only if the demand for medical oxygen touches 800 metric tonnes per day.

Speaking to reporters in Jalna, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the cases of omicron were increasing “rapidly”, but in general such patients were not ending up in the ICU, news agency PTI reported. Nor did they require supplemental oxygen.

“The statewide lockdown will happen only when the demand for medical oxygen increases to 800 metric tonnes (per day),” he said.

The minister did not mention the current rate of consumption of medical oxygen in the state.

“We do not want people to face more restrictions, so I am appealing to people to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour. Wearing a mask is very important,” he insisted.
