Madurai: madurai MP su venkatesan Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been urged to waive the loan education loan Of students studying in war affected Ukraine, In a letter to FM, MP He elaborated on the hardships these students would face for the rest of their lives along with their families even after they manage to return to India without completing the course.
“According to some estimates, there are around 20,000 Indian students in Ukraine whose safety and future are at risk due to the current war,” the MP said. He said that the students went there for higher education courses like medicine because the fees in private medical colleges in India are comparatively very high.
He said that most of these students who went to study in Ukraine belonged to ordinary middle-class families where the parents could not pay the fees with their earnings.
Venkatesan said these students had taken educational loans from banks in India by collateralizing their parents’ hard-earned money. “Now they are in great trouble and in many cases the possibility of default is imminent,” he said.
“I think the time has come for the Government of India to come to the rescue of these students and extend a helping hand to wipe the tears of their families by waiving off the education loans of the students from the lower strata. The financial implications for the said decision would be less as compared to the total loan portfolio of the banks,” the MP said. He also urged them to advise the banks to return the collateralized securities.
