Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) and IIT Guwahati are both known for their engineering courses. In the recent National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Engineering 2024, IIT Madras was ranked as the best Indian institute in the engineering category while IIT Guwahati was ranked seventh.

Both IIT Madras and IIT Guwahati can secure internships for their students in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) courses. But which institute has better internships?

Average Salary

The average salary of IIT Guwahati’s last batch (2022-23) was Rs 41 lakh per annum while that of IIT Madras was Rs 41.72 lakh per annum.

At IIT Guwahati, the average salary has increased from Rs 28 lakh per annum in 2018-19 to Rs 41 lakh per annum in 2022-23. At IIT Madras too, the average salary has increased from Rs 29.28 lakh in 2018-19 to Rs 41.72 lakh per annum in 2021-22.

At IIT Madras, a total of 25 offers were made with salary packages of over Rs 1 crore per annum till the end of Session 1.1. The highest package offered to UG students of IIT Madras was Rs 2.14 crore per annum. In the placement year 2022-2023, the minimum CTC for the CSE branch of IIT Madras was Rs 10.2 lakh per annum, the maximum was Rs 1.31 crore, and the median CTC was Rs 30.36 lakh per annum.

Similarly, at IIT Guwahati, the average CTC for BTech CSE students has increased from 28 to 41 LPA (lakh per annum) every year. Typically, the highest package for BTech CSE students is over Rs 1.2 crore and this year the highest package is Rs 2.4 crore. For the academic year 2022-2023, a minimum CTC of Rs 8 lakh, a maximum CTC of Rs 2.4 crore, an average CTC of 42.10 lakh and a median CTC of 34.48 lakh per annum have been reported.

Students enrolled

The number of enrolled students in BTech CSE at IIT Guwahati has increased from 84 to 108 in the last five years. The situation is similar at IIT Madras, where the CTCs have increased from 108 in 2017-18 to 159 in 2021-22. At IIT Guwahati, a total of 108 students have enrolled in the academic year 2022-2023, of which 104 students (96.30 per cent) have secured admission.
