Guwahati: The Assam Police on Friday arrested another madrassa teacher in Goalpara for his alleged links with the al Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). This is the second arrest in less than 48 hours and fourth one within a week in the district.
The teacher has been identified as Hafizur Rahman Mufti. He was picked up from Jogighopa along the Goalpara-Bongaigaon border. He was reportedly recruited by the two Imams, who were also arrested for their links with AQIS, on August 20.
Goalpara SP VV Rakesh Reddy said Mufti was recruited by Abdus Subhan and Jalaluddin Sheikh. “Subhan and Sheikh were found to have direct links with two modules of the Bangladesh-based radical Islamic group, Ansar ul-Islam, a chapter of AQIS. These modules were busted in Barpeta and Morigaon last month,” he said.
Subhan was engaged as the Imam of Tinkunia Shantipur Masjid and Sheikh was the Imam of Tilapara Natun Masjid in Goalpara district.
The SP said Mufti underwent training in Barpeta district..
