GUWAHATI: Around 15 tonnes of legacy waste of the West Boragaon dumping site in the city, where Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had dumped garbage for 13 years since 2008, will be removed as soon as the civic body settles the tender process.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said, “Garbage is not being dumped here now. GMC has already floated tenders and settled that for early disposal of the legacy waste. A part of the waste will be used by the cement factories.”
It is pertinent to mention that GMC had given a contract to a city-based company — North East Enviro Tech Private Ltd (NEET) — to clean the legacy waste in January last year. However, the company was discontinued by the authorities later.
In 2008, a Hyderabad-based company — Ramky Enviro Engineers — was awarded a contract of Rs 102.15 crore by the GMC for an integrated solid waste management project at the West Boragaon dumping site. Later, the contract with the company was terminated in 2012 over alleged anomalies in carrying out the project.
