Lungs of Covid, MM survivor give life to Kolkata patient. Surat News – Times of India

Surat: In the first such cadaver organ donation by a COVID-19 and mucormycosis recovered patient, organs amputated from a 53-year-old textile embroidery unit owner bring life to six.
Manish Shah was admitted to the hospital in June 2020 due to Kovid-19. Later, in November, 16 teeth, including his jaw, had to be removed after being infected with black fungus. Shah’s lung has been transplanted in Kolkata in a 46-year-old patient whose lungs were badly damaged by the coronavirus. This is also the first interstate lung transplant in the eastern part of the country from Gujarat.
“Won the battle against my husband” covid And also recovered from MM. We knew the painful condition of the Covid patients and hence, we agreed to donate the lungs,” said Mona, wife of the deceased Shah.
On 16 September, Shah complained of pain in his hands and head. He was taken to the hospital for examination and when his condition did not improve, doctors at United Green Hospital performed angioplasty and placed a stent in his heart. However, within an hour he lost consciousness and doctors diagnosed a brain haemorrhage. He underwent a surgery to remove the blood clot in his brain, but on 19 September he declared him brain dead.
Soon, alerted by doctors, Donate Life’s Nilesh Mandlewala convinced the family to donate their organs. “The family was very kind and agreed to donate the organ. This is the first case of organ donation by a Kovid-19 patient. All the organs were examined by the nodal agencies and they were in good condition.
In 190 minutes both the lungs were airlifted to Kolkata, about 1,625 km away and transplanted into a patient who was on ECMO support for more than 103 days. “Manish fought a long battle with Kovid and MM. Even in death he gave life to six people,” said Jatin Shah, the deceased’s cousin and senior official of Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA).
One kidney was donated to a 44-year-old resident of Vadodara and the other to a 29-year-old resident of Ahmedabad, while the liver was donated to a 21-year-old resident of Vadodara.
