Low demand despite low prices in Coonoor tea auction

The average prices at Coonoor Tea Trade Association’s auction sales no: 26 as compared to the previous auction remained almost the same as the increase was only 37 paise per kg to reach Rs 95.88 per kg.

To that extent, it was not only the lowest price among all the auctions so far in this calendar, but the lowest price since May 15, 2020, when the average price stood at Rs 93.93 per kg.

Despite the fall in prices, low demand for several varieties on offer resulted in sales of only 84.90 per cent as against 88.08 per cent in the previous week. Sales declined to 19.63 lakh kg from 23.37 lakh kg in the previous week.

As a result, the total earnings declined to ₹18.82 crore from ₹22.32 crore in the previous week. This meant a reduction of ₹3.50 crore or 15.68 per cent in earnings in just one week.

G Thiagarajan, Proprietor, Shree Abirami Enterprises, said, “The CTC Peco Dust grade of Leaf Tea Factory Homedale Tea Factory, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, topped the entire auction when we bought it for ₹317 per kg.” business Line.

“The easing of the lockdown has brightened our chances of reaching out to tea connoisseurs who prefer high priced tea that has ‘value for money’. This tea has unique taste, taste and appearance,” he said.

Pasco Woodlands Green Tea, auctioned by Paramount Tea Marketing (SI) P Ltd, was bought by Radhika Traders for ₹301 per kg. No other tea could cross the ₹300/kg level.

In orthodox tea, Kodnad got ₹260, Chamaraj ₹256, Glendale ₹235, Nonsuch Orthodox ₹231, Kill Kotagiri ₹216, Melur ₹213, Brooklands ₹202 and Carabetta ₹200.

Among other CTC teas, Crosshill Estate Special got ₹ 233 per kg, Pinewood Estate ₹ 216, Hitakkal Estate ₹ 210, Bellatti Estate ₹ 206 and Shanti Supreme and Vigneshwar Estate ₹ 204.
