‘Love is a combination of six ingredients’: Bell Hook

One of America’s greatest political and social critics, feminist thinker and author Bell Hook died on December 16 at the age of 69, Her writings inspired feminism to incorporate the unique experiences of black and working-class women into a largely white worldview.

In conversation with Buddhist teacher Sharon Salzburg, Hooke discusses the subject of Salzburg’s book Real Love: The Mindful Connection – Dear.

In the video, Hook begins by asking “Where do we start learning what love is? How to love?” As she continued to praise the book, calling it an easy book to learn about love.

Hooks then shared an anecdote to elaborate on his understanding of love: “I remember trying to tell my young boyfriend at the time who didn’t understand love…. The little postcard reads ‘You know, love is a combination of six ingredients: care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect and trust, and so if you don’t know what you’re doing, just take that little one out. Remove the card and ask yourself ‘how my actions reflect these traits, these characteristics, these values’, if you will.”
