Fifties from Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant combined with inspired bowling on the second day of Sunday to give India a big win in the pink ball Test against Sri Lanka.

Chasing a challenging 447 for victory in Bangalore, the tourists were on one wicket with 28 at stumps. By the end of the game, Kusal Mendis was batting on 16 and captain Dimuth Karunaratne was batting on 10.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah caught Lahiru Thirimanne lbw in the match, taking his tally of wickets to six, before three fans ran to the pitch to take a selfie with Virat Kohli.

India declared their second innings at 303–9 in the final session, when Iyer made 67 and Pant made 50 off 28 balls – a Test record for an Indian batsman.

Bumrah backed the gameplan of the left-armer Pant, who is often criticized for throwing his wicket away after the start.

Team vice-captain Bumrah said of this flamboyant batsman, “Every person has a different gameplan, so he has backed his strength.”

“Not every player on the team will play at the same pace, we understand it. He is still gaining more and more experience and learning about the game.”

Iyer, who scored 92 runs in India’s first innings total of 252, scored his third Test half-century with a cracking boundary in his fourth match.

He played up important partnerships including a 45-run stand with Pant and a 63-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 22 runs before Lasith Embuldeniya was dismissed lbw.

Mohammed Shami played an unbeaten 16 before skipper Rohit Sharma called him back to the pavilion after Axar Patel fell.
